All those who were worried for the limited time limit allotted to link their mobile numbers with Aadhaar numbers will definitely feel sigh of relief as Supreme Court’s suggestion for an extension has been accepted by the Centre. Now the new date would be March 31. Previously the deadline was February 6, 2018 as set by the Central government.
The final hearing for all the pending petitions challenging the validity of unique identification number would commence from January 10 with the same bench of Supreme Court.
Aadhaar is a 12 digit unique-identity number issued to all Indian residents based on their biometric and demographic data.
The apex court suggested that the deadline to link Aadhaar-mobile number could be extended to March 31 for the convenience of common public. The reason given by the bench was the previous extensions given by the Centre in other 139 schemes.
The Centre has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar to bank accounts and PAN cards earlier this week and the new deadline is March 31, 2018 as against December 31 to link your Aadhaar number with your bank accounts and PAN cards.
Attorney general K. K. Venugopal clarified in the court that the earlier deadline for Aadhaar-mobile phone linkage i.e., February 6, 2018 was also fixed by the Supreme Court and the government was not objecting the further extension to March 31 if the bench wants.
Counsel for one of the petitioners, K. V. Vishwanathanthen pointed out the role of banks as they forcing people to bring Aadhaar number for the opening of new bank accounts.
Venugopal clarified the above statement saying,it is to fight against black money, counterfeiting and corruption that the banks are demanding Aadhaar for the opening of accounts.
